2018 Pack Horse Newsletter

Happy New year! Hoping you had a lovely Christmas time, and thank you to all who sent us
Christmas cards. We decided to do something different this year and send ‘New Year’ cards
instead (hoping you like the illustration drawn by Laura).
Well, 2018 was a little mixed! Some great high points but some very low too. The
year began with a fantastic trip to Finland to visit Jessie who was working as a Crystal Ski
rep. It was a stunning location in the middle of the Arctic circle, and we embraced
everything from Skiing to reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiling to husky sledding – often in
temperatures reaching -38 degrees! It was a true Winter Wonderland; our only
disappointment was the absence of Santa (who I’m sure was on his annual Caribbean
break!).
February and March, as per usual, were our painting and decorating months. In
addition this year, Wisteria and Honeysuckle were treated to new Bathroom flooring which
seems to have gone down well with our guests.
March also brought us the snow which at times was a challenge; with 3ft high snowdrifts
up to our windows and doors! But no one could deny how pretty Allerford looked all
in white. The thaw was slow which allowed the rivers to cope – so all in all it wasn’t too bad!
Spring seemed to fly with lots of time spent with Jessie preparing for multiple
interviews in Luton for TUI’s new management degree/ apprenticeship. In June she heard
that she was one of 20 candidates (out of 895!) that had been offered a place on this 4-year
paid course – as you can imagine everyone was over the moon!
Sadly, June was also the month that my mum passed away after suffering her second
stroke. The funeral took place on the 7th July in Selworthy church and was filled with
beautiful sunshine, copious amounts of Lavender sprigs (her favourite flower) and the
nostalgic sounds of John Denver. A true celebration of my lovely mum and her fulfilled life.
August continued to be sunny and warm, as was September when we took Jess up to
Luton to start her new adventures and return back to education. Laura too decided to
follow her dreams and left her job in the finance industry to pursue a Master’s in Children’s
Publishing in Bath (the first of its kind).
Laura is loving her course and continues to draw and exhibit her work in Courtyard
framing, Minehead. She is also taking on commissions to help fund her Masters which will
finish in the Summer of 2019. Both her and her partner Jason are still enjoying living in the
Bristol flat we acquired with the help of Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsop on Location Location
Location (filming will have been 2 years ago in May!). The programme has been back in
touch and its likely there will be a ‘revisit’ soon, so watch this space!
Unfortunately, as we got towards the end of the year, it was clear that it was time to
say goodbye to the last of our bunnies, little Treacle (at the ripe old age of 12!), and more
tragically our beautiful and fluffy cat Beau. It had been 4 years since Beau had been hit by a
car and although his character was very strong, he couldn’t recover from multiple infections,
and we knew it was the kindest thing to do. He will be sorely missed by us all and I’m sure
by many of our returning guests. Luckily, fluffy Oskar has now recovered from his brother’s
death and is back to his cheeky, chicken-loving self.
Holly dog is still doing well, although a little grey around the edges – turning 14 next
February – she still loves her daily walks (and sniffs) in Allerford woods.
As for Brian and I, both of us cannot believe that we have been here for 19 years,
and about to embark on our 20th season. We do hope you have a brilliant 2019 and we hope
to see you in it! Love and best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year, Linda, Brian, Laura,
Jess and the Pack Horse pets xxx
