Buying Local This Christmas

It’s such a shame that at this time of year, when the Christmas markets usually get all fired up and Christmas window displays start appearing in the shops, that we’re not allowed to welcome our guests and explore all Exmoor has to offer in the festive season.

It’s as important as ever to shop local at during these uncertain times, and although all our guests have their own local shops in their home towns, many of our guests see The Pack Horse and Exmoor as their home away from home. Whether that’s shopping in the local village shops of Porlock  to buy Christmas presents or going further afield for mementos of their time in Exmoor, our guests support our local economy. In such a tourist reliant area, many small local businesses are missing the support and friendly faces of visitors this year.

Therefore, alongside Visit Exmoor’s Buy Local campaign, we’d like to highlight some wonderful local businesses, some of which that deliver nationwide!

First up is Selworthy Pantry, just round the corner from us, Emma makes wonderful chutneys, jams, honeys and preserves and are wonderful gifts to put in hampers or as a present on their own, for that person who has everything!! Check out their online website HERE. They post nationwide too!

Next is West Country Blacksmiths at Allerford Forge, 50 meters down the road from us in the heart of Allerford. Keiran and his team make bespoke items crafted out of metal. They ship nationwide and have a range of different priced items to buy, smaller candle trays to large firepits or if you want something a bit more bespoke give them a call and they’ll be able to do it for you. Follow their facebook page HERE.

Jackie from Allerford Post Office is also putting on an array of small Christmas cards, decorations and most importantly, CAKE!! Give her a call on: 01243 862410

For the more local Porlock people, the fish and chips from Piggy In The Middle are top notch and are keeping Brain happy with his regular Friday night Fish and Chips!

Next door to us at Cross lane House, Billy and Ellen have also had to adapt to closing their restaurant and taken up providing cheeseboards and Afternoon teas, delivered locally. Lovely as a treat for someone special or celebrating an occasion – or a Christmas present!

For those among you who love a Christmas tipple, Exmoor Distillery makes a mighty fine Northmoor Gin as a lovely gift which can be bought online HERE or Christmas gift sets and gift vouchers that can be bought from their Distillery Shop in Dulverton.

Hannah from Pet Portraits is a local artist and illustrator and does amazing portraits of your four legged friends! Her calendar is filling up fast by popular demand, so be sure to give her a call soon if you want a gift for Christmas.

Courtyard Framing in Minehead, also stocks our daughter Laura’s artwork which decorates the walls in our apartments would make an excellent Exmoor gift. You can email them at : courtyardgallery@live.co.uk.

If you’re still stuck on what to get your nearest and dearest for Christmas, then here at the Pack Horse we’re also offering Gift Vouchers for any amount. You can gift this as a portion of their stay or pay for the full stay, its up to you! Could be the perfect gift for someone with itchy feet wanting to get back to Exmoor!

Give us a call to discuss gift vouchers and we can post it out to you as a special gift under the tree. #Staycation!
